Roger Casement Cumann blog : http://32csmcountyantrim.blogspot.com

The 32 county sovereignty movement in Belfast are pleased to announce the formation of a new cumann in the Belfast area. The cumann name chosen reflects the significance of this centenary year of the Irish volunteers, Irish citizen army and the Dublin lockout of 1913, all of which went on to shape the course of Irish history.
Roger Casement born September 1st 1864, the son of an Ulster protestant and catholic mother from county Cork would emerge as one of the most significant Irish rebels of 1916. He grew up near Ballycastle, co Antrim with an uncle after the separate deaths of both his parents at a young age. After his education in co Antrim he went on to live in Liverpool with his mother’s relatives before taking up consular posts at various locations including Africa and Brazil investigating human rights abuses and was awarded a knighthood for his humanitarian work. Roger Casement returned to Ireland during the home rule period and in 1913 he became a committee member of the Irish volunteers. In 1914 he travelled to America to raise funds for the Irish volunteers and was involved in securing arms for the volunteers through the Howth gun running.
He was arrested in April 1916 after trying to secure the landing of arms for the Easter rising onboard the German ship ‘’the Aud’’, sentenced to high treason he was hanged in Pentonville prison on August 3rd 1916 after delivering one of the most famous and rousing speeches on Irish nationalism from an English dock.
Roger Casements body was buried in quicklime in the cemetery of Pentonville prison before his remains were finally repatriated to Ireland in 1965 on the condition by the British government that his remains don’t be brought into the north of Ireland. He was buried in Glasnevin cemetery, Dublin with full military honours after lying in state at Arbour hill for five days ,were an estimated half a million people filed past his coffin , his last wish remains to be fulfilled – to be buried in Murlough bay ,co Antrim.
